Fabric #3 - cushion detail

These images show detail of a handmade cushion by Scotish artist Jo Gallant. She is based in Kirkcudbright and you can see her work [here]. I have never dared to put this cushion anywhere near a chair though, it's far too precious.

Fabric #2 - homemade felt vase

I made this not-so-waterproof felt vase on a feltmaking weekend hosted by a cumbrian artist Dianne Standen.

Fabric #1 - felt flowers.

The first image in the first themed series here - Fabric.

I bought these amazingly bright felt flowers in the Kyle of Lochalsh at Christmas. I had to bring them this far south to photograph them against a blue sky though.

Riverside Taxidermy shop front, Llangollen

These photos were taken from the steet through glass using a wide aperture to ensure the dirty glass didn't register on these shots. The text and block colour was added later in Photoshop.

Roman Catholic iconography with added red rags. St Lukes Catholic Church, Frodsham.

Roman Catholic iconography with added red rags. St Lukes Catholic Church, Frodsham.

These are the first photos I have taken that I feel are complete shots. Unless landscape and nature shots are really quite stunning, they convey little emotion, and it’s going to take me a fair old time to get that good at landscape photography. These shots though, are conceptual, and I think that having the idea (i.e. adding the red rags), knowing a location and waiting for the right light, seems to build a stronger image than simply reacting to the environment.

You didn't need to worry about looking hungover. Thanks for letting me take your picture.

Mother and week born child, Greenfields Children's Centre, Winsford. Thank you for letting me take your picture.

I spent a rewarding day assisting a professional industrial and architectural photographer at the Children's centre. This shot is from a series of semi-candid portrait shots of friendly young mums and their new born children, taken after the main architectural photography work was done.

Colin Down on 'McMoab' rock garden, Kirroughtree, 7stanes. The bike trail actually goes up this ridge of rock away from the camera position, then drops down steeply to the right of Colin. Not for the faint-hearted.

This is actually photo taken at the weekend, but since it took some image editing today, I figured it would be ok to use this as todays entry, just this once...

Snowdrops, early morning light.

View from Glencaple, Solway Firth, Dumfries and Galloway. I had to wade through ankle deep mud (gloop) to get this shot. I wanted to go further onto the mud flats, but the mud threatened to get much deeper really quite quickly.

Francis Black (x-singer with band The Pixies), Manchester Academy.

Stranger watching the band. These shots are my first attempt at low-light indoor photography. There is no flash used, allowing less invasive shots.

11th Febuary 2008

Tractor shed, A56 Chester/Helsby. I wont be getting up for any more sunrise shots tomorrow, I am far too tired from three sunrise sessions in a row.

"Bouncer" in the local park. I love the bling colar.

Warm early morning light pooring into an disused outbuilding, adjoining the Hendre Isaf Basecamp bunkhouse, Betws-y-Coed, North Wales

Snowdon from Llynau Mymbyr. This is much used road-side photography spot, lazily captured in mid-morning light. At sunrise though, Snowdon glows bright orange from this location. I must go back.

Saturday 9 February 2008

9th Febuary 2008

The first of hopefully many people shots in this project. I feel uncomfortable asking friends and indeed strangers if I can take their picture, although I am working on techniques to make this more of a balanced exchange in the future.

9th Febuary 2008

Sunrise, River Merddwr, Pentrefoelas. This was shot 2 minutes walk away from the excellent Hendre Isaf Basecamp, near Betws-y-Coed, North Wales.

Inside a disused mill, Helsby. There seems to be a confinement theme today...

5th Febuary 2008

I am really not sure which of these I like the best today. I will sit on it for a while. Spraying water on to little things before shooting them is properly cheating, but I quite like the effect.
